We have an active and vital English Department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, with strong programs in creative writing, literary and cultural studies, and rhetoric and composition. No matter your interest, as an undergraduate or graduate student or a potential colleague, you'll find much of interest to explore here in Carbondale. As you'll see, our home page provides links to detailed information about our faculty and course offerings, our two literary journals (The Crab Orchard Review, a nationally recognized literary magazine, and Grassroots, an undergraduate creative arts journal), opportunities we offer in Irish Studies, and our undergraduate and graduate student organizations. I'm very pleased you've chosen to visit our web site and hope you'll soon take an opportunity to visit our beautiful campus.

Mission Statement

The Department of English agrees with John Henry Cardinal Newman that “liberal education, viewed in itself, is simply the cultivation of the intellect, as such, and its object is nothing more or less than intellectual excellence.” Through teaching, research, and service, the Department shall pursue this excellence as the University’s foremost proponent of literacy and humanistic education. Its members shall—enlarge the understanding of language, improve the quality of reading and writing, and deepen the awareness of our literary heritage.
